Okan University Turkey – Istanbul
Founded in 1999, Okan University is one of the most dynamic universities in Turkey and is home to a diverse undergraduate and graduate student body, with nearly 26,000 students from Turkey and many countries around the world. It offers 254 programs under 9 faculties, two vocational schools and three graduate schools.
Okan University contributes to the development of knowledge both nationally and internationally with its high quality education, accredited programs and its research centers. In close cooperation with various business sectors, the university has developed curricula and internship programs for its students to enhance their employability skills.
True to its motto, “The University Closest to the World of Business”, Okan University effectively combines theory and practice by employing distinguished academic staff and inviting expert professionals to lecture the students to prepare them for successful careers. Okan Foundation also provides various scholarship opportunities for international students.
Besides the main campus on the Asian part of Istanbul, with the modern faculty buildings, residence halls and social facilities, Okan University has two other campuses in the central locations of the city.
Since the 2006-2007 academic year, the rapidly growing university has been located in its new and modern Akfırat campus. Now, it reached 63 undergraduate, 41 master and 13 Ph. D. programs under eight faculties, two vocational schools and three graduate schools.
Okan University aims to build a bridge between the academic and the business world. To this end, the university enables students to work at firms as part of its Preparing for Business Life Program, starting from their freshman year. This program not only helps students to become familiar with business life and improve their knowledge and skills by putting theory into practice, but serves to motivate the students as well.
Students who have successfully completed the Preparing for Business Life Program are presented with a participation certificate as well as other work experience certifications added to their diplomas when they graduate.

Featuring the finest in contemporary architecture, Akfırat Campus has all the features a modern university should have. Another advantage of Okan University’s Akfırat Campus is its close proximity to Sabiha Gökçen Airport and the F1 Race Track. What is more, the Sports Center, which includes a 400-person capacity gymnasium, a swimming pool, tennis, basketball, and volleyball courts as well as a soccer field, was designed so that students might spend their free time in the best way possible.
Okan University has dormitories for both male and female students. The dormitory facilities include study rooms, a dining hall, a cafeteria, a cleaning service, a laundry, a security team which is on duty day and night to ensure students’ safety throughout the dormitory premises, an infirmary with a doctor on hand 7/24, and wireless and cable internet.

Faculty of Dentistry
Okan University Faculty of Dentistry admitted its first students in the 2014-15 academic year and started its educational activities with a strong, dynamic and experienced academic staff, including members with vision in their respective fields, in the national and international platforms. Following the active and intensive preclinical education, having acquired the knowledge and skills to treat patients in clinic under supervision of faculty members, our students will attend their theoretical classes and patient side clinical education in the Faculty of Dentistry Training and Practice Hospital in Mecidiyeköy and in Tuzla opened in 2017, beginning from the third year.
Our Training and Practice Hospital includes classrooms and excellent technical equipment in terms of dental units, radiological imaging devices and dental instruments and materials specific to each branch for a modern clinical education. Moreover, the ‘technological water disinfection system’, used for purposes of infection control in the hospital of our faculty, makes a great contribution to safety of our students, patients, physicians and employees in terms of infection control.

Faculty of Medicine
Okan University, School of Medicine began its academic life in the Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences Educational Complex in September 2014. First of all, our students take basic science education in this complex equipped with wide range of medical equipment and proper infrastructure. In basic sciences education, whole human body anatomy, histology, physiology medical biochemistry, medical biology and genetics, medical microbiology disciplines are taught in an integrated manner starting from cell and extended to organs retrospectively.

Students who have taken basic sciences education will begin their internship where they will find a chance to interact with the patient on a one-to-one basis and get clinical education beginning in the 4th semester. This internship at first will take place in internal medicine, surgery, gynecological diseases and obstetrics, pediatric and children diseases followed by other disciplines in medicine. In 6th semester, our students will complete 12-months period of patient contact and resolving health issues based on cases and eventually they will graduate as alumni of Okan University School of Medicine.

Okan University Conservatory offers undergraduate programs in Music and Theater with qualified academics And famous actors and actresses. In the department of Music, students are offered both Turkish and European music with all types and in the third year of the program, they choose either Turkish or European music. In the department of Theater, contemporary techniques of acting are thought in theory and practice. International Programs Office
Internationalization has always been one of the priorities of Okan University. The University implements its strategy by establishing bilateral exchange, academic cooperation and Double Degree agreements with universities all around the world. It also takes part and plays an important role in the European and global student exchange programs.
Erasmus Program
Erasmus is a European Union student and staff exchange program which gives the students the opportunity to study one or two semesters in a European university with financial support. Erasmus Program provides the students with the possibility of improving their academic, social and linguistic skills and also increasing their employability. Okan University has been participating in the Erasmus Program since 2006 by sending and receiving an increasing number of students each year. The program is open to all degree students enrolled at Okan University, regardless of their nationality.
ISEP
Okan University is also an active member of the International Student Exchange Program (ISEP), which comprises more than 300 universities worldwide. All degree students who meet the requirements of the exchange program have the opportunity to study one or two semesters in the country of their choice.
Bilateral Exchange Programs
In addition to being part of different student exchange networks, Okan University has numerous bilateral agreements with universities all around the world. Bilateral agreements are signed with universities from the USA to China, Russia and South Korea, from New Zealand to North Africa. Students have the possibility of studying in a large spectrum of universities, experience different cultures.
Double Major and Minor Studies
Students with high academic performance can choose to major in a second academic program by completing an additional 48 credit workload and receive two diplomas when they graduate. Students can also choose to
do a minor study in an academic program that is of interest to them by completing 18 additional credits.
Double Degrees
Double degrees are one of the major components of the internationalization strategy of Okan University. Okan University has different Double Degree Programs in subject areas ranging from Business Studies to Engineering and Fine Arts, with the European and North American universities degree students are provided with the opportunity of 3+1 or 4+1 study programs at the end of which they will obtain two degrees from Okan University and from the Partner University.
Foreign Languages
Foreign language skills are essential in succeeding in the global economy. Okan University puts a special emphasis on learning and teaching of foreign languages.
Although English is offered as a major foreign language at the university, all students are encouraged to learn a second foreign language. Students are provided with language courses in German, Chinese, Russian and Arabic. All Okan students are required to pass an English proficiency test before starting their first year of academic studies. Students who fail the exam are required to attend one year of English Preparatory School, at the end of which they are able to speak and write English at a professional level.
Okan University’s Turkish Language Teaching Center, which is equipped with the latest technologies, offers Turkish for Foreigners courses to all international students as well as other foreign languages.
Campuses
The main campus for undergraduate programs is the Tuzla Campus on the Asian part of Istanbul. The campus is close to Istanbul’s second international airport Sabiha Gokcen Airport. Tuzla campus houses modern faculty buildings, residence halls, student center with cafeterias, shops, a cinema and game room. On the campus, there is also a sports complex which includes a semi-olympic size swimming pool, an indoor basketball court, a fitness center equipped with state-of-the art equipment and a martial arts room.
Also available are outdoor basketball courts, tennis court and a football field. Tuzla campus is ideal for undergraduate students with its safe and pleasant environment. University shuttle buses as well as public buses connect the campus to downtown areas, Kadikoy and Taksim.
There are other campuses in central locations of the city: Kadıköy, Mecidiyeköy, Bahçelievler. Graduate programs are delivered either at Mecidiyekoy or Kadikoy or Bahçelievler campus. Both are business districts with easy access and excellent public transportation links.
Student Facilities
With its online search catalog and continuously growing e-journal and e-book data bases, the main library on Tuzla campus supports students in their learning. The library has a computer lab, study rooms and late closing hours for the convenience of students. 27 computer labs on campus and wireless service in all faculty buildings and Residence Halls are available for the use of students. Tuzla campus hosts a bookstore and photocopying facilities.
Career Services
Career Services Office helps students start their career planning during their studies. In seminars and Career Days organized by the Office, students learn about their own aptitudes, as well as different sectors and expectations of employers. Career Services Office also offers internship opportunities, on-campus work programs and alumni activities.
Accommodation and Meals
Okan University offers accommodation for 1500 students in four fully equipped Residence Halls on its main campus in Tuzla. Students can choose to stay in single, double or four-person rooms. The dormitories have study halls, TV rooms and a medical center. Restaurants and cafeterias serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Laundry and daily cleaning services are also provided. International Students have reservation priority for the dormitories. Accommodation Campus cafeterias serve hot food and snacks all day. On Tuzla campus, there is a food court with restaurants and coffee shops. In addition to the restaurants, special meal packages are available for the purchase of students.
Social Life
Social and cultural activities are considered integral parts of education at Okan University. Many seminars, conferences and symposia are organized at the university with the participation of distinguished scholars. Students are also encouraged to take part in social, cultural and sports activities through the Student Clubs. Some examples of current Student Clubs are Dance Club, Photography Club, Aikido Club, Motor Sports Club and Social Responsibility Club. Regular trips to historical sites and touristic regions are organized by the Tourism Club. Okan Spring Festival is organized every year by student organizations.
Medical Facilities
The university operates a free medical clinic for students. Facilities are open Monday through Friday 09:00-17:00. A physician and a registered nurse provide assistance for minor illnesses or injuries at Tuzla campus 24/7 principle
Student Affairs Office
Student Affairs Office is where student records are kept, where their documents are prepared. Student Affairs Office is responsible for registration in the beginning of each semester, issuing of student ID cards, transcripts and diplomas.
Students Mental Aid
Psychological counselors at OPDEM provide individual advising to students to help them deal with any academic, emotional or social problems they may experience. Individual advising sessions are free of charge and strictly confidential. OPDEM also organizes seminars and prepares educational materials for the personal development of students, such as on improving communication skills, managing time effectively and dealing with stress. Work Permit in Turkey
Within one month of a student’s arrival in Turkey, international students must obtain a residence permit by application to the local authorities. Student advisors of the International Office will help students obtain their residence permits. International students should bring 12 passport size photos with them and expect to pay a small fee for residence permit applications.
Student visa in Turkey
Students who are not Turkish citizens require a Student Visa to enter Turkey. Exceptions are made for those who are legal dependents of someone residing in Turkey on a diplomatic mission or with a valid residence and/or work permit. Student Visas must be obtained before coming to Turkey from a Turkish Consulate. Student visas cannot be obtained within Turkey. International students, who are accepted for studies at Okan University, will receive a “Letter of Acceptance” to facilitate their Student Visa application to the Turkish Consulate in their home country.
The Consulate will provide an application form upon request and the payment of an application fee. The process of issuing a student visa for Turkey generally takes around 6 weeks. Health Insurance
It is mandatory to pay for General Health Insurance during your studies in Turkey. The insurance is issued by Turkish Social Security Institution. The insurance will be valid until the end of each academic year and it needs to be renewed. You can visit state or private hospitals for medical care. With the insurance state hospitals will offer you low-cost care, whereas the cost of each private hospital will change in accordance with their price policy. You can also buy medicine prescribed to you by the doctors from pharmacies with reduced price, all these discounts will be covered by the health insurance system.
Preparatory School in Miami
Okan International University (OIU) was founded in Miami on 2015 based on international experience of Okan Group and academic support by Okan University. Students admitted to Okan University may have English preparatory school in OIU Miami, if they request so. Options of undergraduate degree, master’s degree and Distance Education are available in OIU, which admits students all around the world and offers opportunity of international experience. Lifeline Med, a school dealing with the field of health in Miami, is acquired by OIU and thus, health programs educate students to supply labor force to the healthcare sector that is globally improving and demanded. of International Student Exchange Program (ISEP) from Turkey and accordingly, students have the opportunity to have free-of-charge education from one of more than 330 universities in 50 countries.
Okan University Hospital
Drawing its strength from academic knowledge and experience, Okan University Hospital adopts multidisciplinary approach in specific surgeries and difficult cases along with the diagnostic and therapeutic services rendered by experienced physicians in all medical departments. Outpatient Clinic
Acibadem Outpatient Clinic is put into service in 2017 by Okan University in accordance with the vision “making contributions to setting the future healthcare standards and to be a healthcare facility that guides the health sector; now, high-standard services, advanced technology devices, attending physicians and experienced personnel are available for outpatient services.
